Big Red hoping to score upset of Owls in NCAA Tournament
NCAA Basketball Betting Lines
03/19/2010 -
Jacksonville, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - What is expected to be one of the most
competitive games of the NCAA Tournament's first round pits the fifth-seeded
Temple Owls against the 12th-seeded Cornell Big Red in East Region action at
Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.
The winner of this battle advances to take on either fourth-seeded Wisconsin
or 13th-seeded Wofford on Sunday.
Cornell is making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and has never won a
game in the event. The Big Red are 27-4 overall this season and cruised to the
Ivy League title. A victory today would enable the team to tie a record set by
the 1970-71 Penn Quakers for most wins in a season by an Ivy squad (28).
Cornell is led by Ivy League Coach of the Year Steve Donahue, who formerly
served as an assistant coach for Temple head coach Fran Dunphy when the pair
were at Penn.
Temple is riding a 10-game win streak that has enabled the team to move to
29-5 overall, and after winning the Atlantic 10 Tournament title, many
expected the Owls to be no lower than a four seed. Therefore, the fact that
they did receive a fifth seed could provide added motivation for Dunphy's
squad. The proud program is making its 28th NCAA Tournament appearance and
owns a 31-27 record.
An Ivy League team hasn't won an NCAA Tournament game since 1998, something
Temple will try to prevent today. This game marks the first-ever meeting
between Cornell and Temple on the hardwood.
There are three All-Ivy performers on the Cornell roster, and Ryan Wittman is
clearly the man to watch. The Ivy League Player of the Year, Wittman is
averaging 17.5 ppg on 42 percent shooting from three-point range. He is also
an 85.7 percent shooter from the foul line and will undoubtedly have the ball
in his hands at the end of today's game if the score is close. Jeff Foote, the
club's center, provides 12.3 ppg on 62.3 percent field goal efficiency, and he
is ripping down 8.2 rpg to go along with 60 blocks. Louis Dale rounds out the
impressive trio with 11.9 ppg, and he has handed out 134 assists while
recording 39 steals. The Big Red are posting 75.3 ppg, an impressive output
for an Ivy League team, and the fact that they are shooting 43.4 percent from
three-point range is downright staggering. Defensively, Cornell is holding
foes to 63.2 ppg.
The key to Temple's success this season has been its outstanding play at the
defensive end of the court, as the team is limiting opponents to 56.1 ppg on
37.9 percent shooting from the floor, including 28.1 percent from three-point
range. The Owls are netting a modest 64.9 ppg at the offensive end, and they
are outrebounding foes by 4.4 rpg. Not only does Ryan Brooks lead Temple in
scoring with 14.3 ppg, he provides a tremendous amount of leadership as well.
Juan Fernandez checks in with 12.6 ppg, and he is tops on the roster with 120
assists. As for Lavoy Allen, who provides the muscle up front, he is scoring
11.5 ppg. Much more than just a scorer, Allen is ripping down an impressive
average of 120 assists to go along with 79 assists and 50 blocks, proof of his
versatility.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.
Bet NFL Sports Lines
Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.
Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.
A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.
Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.
Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
