Blackhawks visit Red Wings in Central Division clash
Hockey Betting Lines
01/17/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Red Wings have won eight straight Central Division
titles, but the Blackhawks are doing their best to make sure that run comes to
an end.
Chicago will try to extend its scoreless streak over Detroit this afternoon at
Joe Louis Arena in the fourth meeting between the division rivals this season.
Since the start of the 2000-01 season, it has been the Red Wings that have
come out on top in the Central standings, winning a pair of Stanley Cup
championships in that span while also eliminating the Blackhawks in last
season's Western Conference finals. However, Detroit currently finds itself
outside of the playoff race in the Western Conference, two points behind the
eighth spot.
The Red Wings are also third in a division that they have dominated over the
past decade. In their place right now is the Blackhawks, who lead the Central
with 70 points and are tied with the Sharks for the most points in the NHL.
Chicago kept pace with San Jose on Saturday, rallying with three goals in the
third period to beat Columbus by a 6-5 margin. Jonathan Toews scored a pair of
power-play goals in the third frame, both set up by Patrick Kane as part of
his three-assist game, and Ben Eager also scored in the third.
"Johnny [Toews] made a couple of nice shots," said Blackhawks head coach Joel
Quenneville. "Kaner (Patrick Kane) has been making some plays five-on-five and
on the power play. Our power play has been pretty dangerous lately.
Cristobal Huet got the victory despite allowing five goals on 26 shots, giving
the Blackhawks a seventh win in their last nine games. Chicago also won the
opener of a season-high eight-game road trip.
It is unknown who will start today for the Blackhawks, but it might not
matter. Chicago has won the last two meetings by identical 3-0 scores, with
Huet stopping all 20 shots he faced in a December 20 home victory before Antti
Niemi halted all 33 shots he saw three days later in Motown.
Detroit hasn't scored versus Chicago since the second period of a 3-2 home win
on October 8, leaving the club scoreless in its last 142 minutes and 11
seconds versus the Blackhawks.
The Red Wings, who have dropped four of their last five to the 'Hawks, are
3-1-1 over their last five games and are a bit healthier since they last faced
Chicago. Henrik Zetterberg, Dan Cleary, Jonathan Ericsson and Valtteri
Filppula all missed the most recent meeting but have since returned from
injury.
The Red Wings are coming off yesterday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Stars. Todd
Bertuzzi and Brian Rafalski scored in the first period to stake Detroit to an
early edge, but Dallas rallied to force the extra time. Both clubs then went
scoreless in the first five rounds of the shootout before Dallas' Steve Ott
beat Jimmy Howard on a controversial goal to begin the sixth round.
Ott's low backhander appeared to be stopped by Howard as the goaltender threw
it out with his glove on his second swipe. It was ruled no goal on the ice,
but after a lengthy review it was determined that the puck had crossed the
line before Howard's second attempt with the glove got it out.
Patrick Eaves represented the last hope for the Red Wings, but his wrister
went wide of the net.
"We let them stick around too long," said Howard, who made 28 saves in his
11th straight start. "I thought we did a pretty good job tonight and still got
a point out of it. But it was frustrating the way the game ended."
The Red Wings, who have won three straight and six of their last seven at
home, could give Chris Osgood his first start since December 20 today. He has
split his two starts versus the Blackhawks this year, while Howard made 28
saves in the December 23 meeting that represented his first-ever appearance
versus Chicago.

Stanley Cup betting
New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.
The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.
MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.
Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
