Blazers wrap up homestand by hosting Magic
Basketball Betting Lines
01/15/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Orlando Magic will resume a four-game western road trip
tonight, when they take on the Portland Trail Blazers from the Rose Garden.
Orlando had a brief two-game winning streak stopped and evened its mark on the
trek at 1-1 following Wednesday's 115-97 loss against the Denver Nuggets at
the Pepsi Center. Matt Barnes led the Southeast Division-leading Magic with 28
points and nine rebounds, while J.J. Redick finished with 13 points in defeat.
"Well our turnovers were awful and we couldn't play their post-ups, and that
I'll take the blame for. Double teams they scored every time, when we didn't
double they scored every time and we just turned the ball over, we couldn't
find any offense to run that was any good," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said.
Mickael Pietrus had 12 points and Dwight Howard ended with eight and a game-
high 13 boards for Orlando, which played without veteran guard Vince Carter
for a third consecutive game because of a shoulder injury. He is listed as
questionable for Friday.
The Magic, who are just a half-game ahead of Atlanta in the division
standings, own a 12-9 road record this season and will close out the current
trek against the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers on Monday. The Lakers
beat Orlando in five games in last year's NBA Finals.
Portland will wrap up a five-game homestand Friday and is 2-2 on the residency
after handing Milwaukee a 120-108 setback on Wednesday. Brandon Roy had 22
points and four assists for the Blazers, who improved to 15-7 at home and sit
1 1/2 games behind Denver for the top spot in the Northwest Division.
"We're just coming out and I think we are playing with a lot of energy," Roy
said on the team's site. "Tonight, it was great to have Rudy (Fernandez) back
out there, giving us a little depth. I looked out there at one point and we
had a full second lineup out there. That's been the biggest difference in
putting teams away, now we have some depth where guys don't have to play so
many minutes."
LaMarcus Aldridge added 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Andre
Miller chipped in 19 points and six assists in a winning effort. Fernandez had
two points in just over 15 minutes and was on the floor for the first time
since early December.
Orlando has won two straight and six of seven meetings with Portland,
including a 92-83 victory on December 19 at Amway Arena. The Magic are
unbeaten in their last three trips to the Rose Garden.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
