Braves' Lowe goes for win No. 4 vs. Phillies
Baseball Betting Lines
04/22/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Roy Halladay became the first four-game winner in the
majors this season when the Philadelphia Phillies ace defeated Atlanta on
Wednesday. Derek Lowe will attempt to be the next to accomplish the feat when
he gets the call for the Braves in tonight's rubber match of a three-game
series between the National League East rivals from Turner Field.
The Phillies rebounded from a startling extra-inning loss to the Braves in
Tuesday's opener behind the latest gem from Halladay, the former Toronto Blue Jays star who was acquired by Philadelphia in a blockbuster trade over the
winter. The All-Star hurler went the distance on a five-hitter as the
defending NL champions evened this set with a 2-0 triumph.
Halladay struck out seven while walking just one in his second complete-game
performance of the young season. Through his first four starts as a Phil, the
2003 American League Cy Young Award recipient has yielded only four runs --
three earned -- over a combined 33 innings.
"I think my goal was to be aggressive," Halladay said afterward. "It's worked
out better than I could have thought so far. I just go out with an idea of how
to pitch, and I've been able to do that so far."
Raul Ibanez gave Halladay all the support he would need with an RBI double in
the top of the second inning, with Jayson Werth adding another run-scoring
double in the sixth to put Philadelphia up 2-0. Both runs came against Braves
starter Tim Hudson (1-1), who struck out five over six innings of work in a
tough-luck loss.
Atlanta had won five of its last six coming in, including an improbable 4-3,
10-inning victory on Tuesday in which the Braves scored three times off Phils
closer Ryan Madson in the bottom of the ninth to stay alive.
The Braves have yet to lose whenever Lowe has stepped on the mound this year,
mainly because the club has racked up a total of 32 runs in the veteran right-
hander's first three outings of 2010. He's been a Phillies' killer in the
past, however, boasting a 6-1 record and a 2.56 earned run average over 10
starts and four relief appearances against Philadelphia.
Lowe went 2-0 in three starts versus the Phils a year ago and surrendered a
mere three runs over a span of 19 2/3 innings in those games.
The 36-year-old allowed four runs (3 earned) in a 5 1/3-inning stint during
Friday's 9-5 decision over Colorado at Turner Field. Six days earlier, Lowe
beat San Francisco on the road by twirling six effective innings of one-run
ball.
Philadelphia hands the ball to graybeard Jamie Moyer for tonight's finale. The
47-year-old has surrendered five runs over six innings in each of his first
two starts of the season, earning a win at Houston on April 10 and losing at
home to Florida this past Saturday.
The battle-tested lefty will be shooting for the 260th victory of his
accomplished career this evening, but has often struggled in previous matchups
with Atlanta. Moyer is 4-9 with a 5.49 ERA in 16 career games (14 starts)
against the Braves, although he did beat them by giving up just one run over 4
1/3 innings of relief last August.
Philadelphia has taken six of the last nine meetings between these divisional
foes and is 14-6 over its past 20 games played at Turner Field.
