Pistons, Sixers clash in Philly
Basketball Betting Lines
04/06/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Two of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference playing
out the string get together tonight in the City of Brotherly Love, where the
Philadelphia 76ers play host to the Detroit Pistons at the Wachovia Center.
The Sixers have lost three in a row and six of their last eight games, and are
coming off Saturday's 128-123 overtime loss versus Toronto. Andre Iguodala had
33 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds and five steals, while Jrue Holiday
ended 10-of-12 from the floor for a career-high 25 points for the 76ers, who
suffered the loss despite erasing a 17-point deficit in the third quarter.
"What stands out is our starting forwards didn't get a rebound," Sixers coach
Eddie Jordan said. "We got some key stops and key misses, but we didn't get a
rebound. When you're playing small, you have to concentrate on rebounding
against those midsize guys that you're matched up against."
Over the past four games, Iguodala is averaging 23.3 points, 8.0 assists, 7.8
rebounds and 2.75 steals. For the first time in 713 games played, Elton Brand
failed to record a rebound in defeat.
In injury news for the Sixers, who are 12-26 as the host, forward Thaddeus
Young is questionable for Tuesday's game with a broken right thumb. Young has
missed nine straight games and is averaging 13.8 ppg.
Detroit hopes to put the brakes on an 11-game losing streak Tuesday in the
finale of a short road trip in south Philly. It has also lost 11 in a row on
the road and fell to 7-30 away from The Palace following Saturday's 91-85
setback at Atlanta's Philips Arena.
Rodney Stuckey had 22 points, Tayshaun Prince provided 17 and seven boards and
Will Bynum had 13 points for the Pistons, who haven't won since March 12
versus the Washington Wizards. Their last road win was a 101-89 decision at
Sacramento on February 23.
"We took care of the basketball, and it gives yourself a chance," said Detroit
head coach John Kuester. "We had about four or five possessions in the fourth
period where we didn't come up with anything. That hurt us. That's a stretch
where we really had to have good offense and good execution. We had some good
looks; the ball just didn't go in the hole."
Jonas Jerebko recorded 11 points and nine boards in defeat. On the injury
front for Detroit, guard Richard Hamilton (ankle) and center Jason Maxiell
(back) are both questionable for tonight's game. Hamilton has missed three
straight games, while Maxiell has been sidelined in consecutive contests.
Detroit leads the 2009-10 series with Philadelphia by a 2-1 count and has won
11 of the previous 17 matchups between the teams. It has also won eight of 11
and 10 of the last 15 trips to the Wachovia Center.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
