Celtics eliminate Heat in five games

04/27/2010 -
Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ray Allen hit 5-of-6 from behind the arc and
scored a team-high 24 points to help the Celtics close out their Eastern
Conference quarterfinal series against the Heat with a 96-86 Game 5 victory at
TD Garden.
Boston led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter and thwarted a Miami
comeback by hitting 52.9 percent from the field in the final stanza. The
Celtics now await the winner of the Cavaliers-Bulls series, which could be
completed on Tuesday with a Cleveland win.
Paul Pierce chipped in 21 points, Kevin Garnett added 14 and Rajon Rondo
filled the stat sheet with 16 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds for
Boston, which made it to the conference semifinals last season before bowing
out to the Orlando Magic.
Dwyane Wade, who scored a franchise playoff-record 46 points in Game 4 to
carry Miami to its only win in the series, logged 31 points on 10-of-24
shooting to go with 10 assists and eight rebounds in possibly his final game
in a Heat uniform.
Mario Chalmers scored 20 points off the bench for the Heat, while starters
Quentin Richardson, Michael Beasley and Jermaine O'Neal combined to shoot
5-of-21 for a total of 13 points.
Wade, who has the right to opt-out of his contract and become a free agent on
July 1, finished off a three-point play less than two minutes into the fourth
quarter to get Miami within 73-70 after trailing big in the third.
Allen answered with a three-point play of his own -- aided by a goaltending
violation -- and the Celtics scored six straight near the midway point to go
up 88-76 on Garnett's jumper just inside the three-point line.
With 2 1/2 minutes left, Wade put in another basket while being fouled, with
his free throw making it 91-83.
After Allen countered with a three, Chalmers hit one of his own from behind
the arc, and following an offensive foul on Garnett, Miami had a chance to
make it a two-possession game.
Wade, though, turned the ball over and Pierce rattled in a jumper for a 10-
point lead with 1:18 remaining. Chalmers' missed three at the other end
essentially sealed the outcome, and allowed the Celtics an early entrance into
the second round.
Boston scored the final six points of the first quarter to build a 29-21 lead,
which moved to a dozen, 42-30, late in the second after two Pierce free throws
capped a 9-1 run with 3:55 left in the half.
The hosts went into halftime with a 48-38 advantage and quickly made it a 21-
point game five minutes into the third quarter.
In a four-possession span, Garnett converted a three-point play and Allen had
a trio of makes from long range. After a Miami timeout, Wade turned the ball
over, and Kendrick Perkins laid one in off a behind-the-back feed from Rondo,
resulting in a 67-46 game with just under seven minutes left.
That bucket, however, proved to be Boston's last field goal of the frame, as
Miami's 19-4 run -- highlighted by a pair of three-point makes by Chalmers and
Wade -- cut Miami's deficit to 71-65 with 12 minutes to play.
Game Notes

Michael Vick is back, Brett Favre isn't and the NFC East remains the best division in the NFC, maybe in all of football.
As players start to gather for the start of another season, some things change and some stay the same in the world of the NFL.
Bet 2010 Super Bowl Odds
The NFC East has been the dominant division in the National Conference for a while, despite limited playoff success, save for the New York Giants surprise Super Bowl win two seasons ago.
Hell, there's a generation of kids in Texas who have never seen the Cowboys win a playoff game (last win was in 1996).
But collectively, the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins (well, maybe not so much the Redskins) are as good as a division gets in an NFC conference that has struggled to stay competitive with the AFC side.
Sports bettors have both acknowledged the NFC East's dominance, as one glance at the NFL future odds menu will show.
Looking over the NFL betting odds at online sports book MySportsbook.com we see the top three teams listed to win the NFC Championship are all from the NFC East:
Dallas Cowboys - 7 - 1
Philadelphia Eagles - 13 - 2
New York Giants - 9 - 2
Slotting in behind these three are two teams from the NFC North: the Minnesota Vikings (15-2) and the Chicago Bears (10-1).
Again, despite the lack of recent playoff success, the Dallas Cowboys are popular with the sports betting community, as they hold 14% of all the money wagered on who will win the NFC Championship.
So far, the New York Giants are the bettors' favorite to represent their conference in the Super Bowl, as they have 24% of the overall NFC Championship betting volume.
And what about the Philadelphia Eagles? For the most part, the Eagles had a very productive offseason, the kind that could bring them back to the top.
They had a good draft adding the likes of WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy.
Unfortunately, the team received a blow when long-time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away on Tuesday.
But this team will make a real run at the division title this year. Going into the regular season, Philly is listed at +240 to win the division.
Last season the Eagles were 9-6-1 SU and 10-6 ATS.
Teams from the NFC East will play teams from the AFC West in the regular season and the Eagles haven't really been a good bet in the last 20 games against the likes of San Diego, Oakland, K.C. and Denver, only going 8-12 ATS.
Two seasons removed from that Super Bowl title, the New York Giants see themselves listed as the odds-on favorite in NFC East championship futures at +162.
Plaxico Burress is gone and with him all the bad publicity surrounding the gun in the sweatpants incident, but can they replace him in the offense?
Last season the Giants were a very reliable bet going 12-4 ATS.
In the Giants' last 20 games against fellow teams from the NFC East; they are 13-7 ATS.
Dallas is listed at +240 to win the division.
Dallas went 9-7 SU and 7-9 ATS last season and with the amount of talent the Cowboys have, a similar performance won't do.
The Cowboys have been atrocious against divisional rivals, going 6-14 ATS in their last 20.
The Washington Redskins are longshots to win the division at +550.
